If you've prepped for the GRE and just learned you also need the dMAT for your German Master's application, here's the honest comparison — including the one section type your GRE prep did nothing for.
They don't replace each other. The dMAT is a mandatory APS-process requirement for affected fields (Summer Semester 2027 intake onward); the GRE is only needed if your target universities ask for it. And while both are "aptitude tests", they test meaningfully different skills.
| dMAT | GRE GENERAL TEST | |
|---|---|---|
| Run by | g.a.s.t. (TestDaF Institute), for the German APS process | ETS, accepted globally |
| Who needs it | Mandatory for Indian Master's applicants in affected fields (Engineering, Commerce/Finance/Economics, Business/Management), Summer '27 intake+ | Only if a specific university programme asks for it |
| Sections | Core module: Figure Sequences, Mathematical Equations, Latin Squares (20 tasks / 25 min each) + General Academic Module (90 min) | Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Analytical Writing (essay) |
| Language skills tested | None — no vocabulary, no reading comprehension, no essays | Heavy vocabulary + reading comprehension + essay |
| Duration | ~3 hrs testing + 30-min break | ~1 hr 58 min |
| Scoring | 0–200 per module (mean 100) + percentile rank; total = sum | 130–170 per section + essay 0–6 |
| Format | Digital at licensed test centres; all single-choice; no notes allowed | Computer-based at centres or at home; multiple formats |
| Fee | €150 | ≈ US$220 in India (check current ETS pricing) |

GRE quant skills map well onto the dMAT's Mathematical Equations subtest — systems of equations with integer unknowns (1–20). The twist: dMAT forbids note-taking, so you must solve mentally under a 75-second-per-task pace. Retrain for speed, not content.
Figure Sequences (patterns moving through grids by hidden rules) and Latin Squares (5×5 letter-placement deduction) have no GRE equivalent. This is two-thirds of the core module and where your prep time should go. Try both formats free →
There's also a reverse gap worth enjoying: everything you sweated over for GRE Verbal — vocabulary lists, reading comprehension, the essay — is simply absent from the dMAT. No AWA, no "loquacious vs garrulous."
No. If your previous degree is in an affected field and you're applying for Summer Semester 2027 or later, the dMAT certificate is a required part of your APS documentation — GRE scores don't substitute.
If your universities require GRE, yes — and the good news is quant prep does double duty. Add 25-minute daily figural-reasoning drills for dMAT on top; that's the part GRE prep won't cover.
Different, rather than harder. GRE punishes weak vocabulary and slow reading; dMAT punishes unfamiliarity with its three formats and the no-notes rule. For most Indian engineering grads, dMAT's math is easier than GRE quant — but the figural section is unfamiliar territory for everyone.
The dMAT date is fixed: 26 September 2026 (register by 15 September). GRE is flexible year-round, so schedule it around the immovable dMAT date — and remember APS processing takes time before university deadlines.
PrepDMAT's free diagnostic shows exactly which dMAT skills you already have from GRE prep — and builds your plan around the ones you don't.
