"How do I even study for this?" is the most-asked question about the dMAT right now — and most answers circulating online are wrong. This guide covers what actually works: the right materials, worked examples of every subtest, how to train for the no-rough-paper rule, a week-by-week plan that counts back from 26 September 2026, and where to attempt full mocks in the real exam interface. Because the dMAT is new, students are reaching for familiar Indian aptitude books. Most don't fit. The dMAT uses fixed g.a.s.t. question formats — the same family as TestAS — and format familiarity is most of the battle:

Technique: track each figure separately, verbalise its rule in words ("circle: border, clockwise, 2 steps; square: rotates right"), then verify against every matrix before answering. Most errors come from checking only the last transition.
Technique: always substitute from the simplest equation into the most connected one; letters are integers 1–20, so sanity-check every intermediate value. Do the arithmetic in small spoken steps ("five B minus B is four B") to hold it without paper.
Technique: don't stare at the question-mark cell. Scan for the most-filled row or column first, force those cells, and let the constraints cascade toward the "?". Saying placed letters aloud in your head prevents re-deriving them.

The rule that worries applicants most — no note-taking, anywhere in the exam — is confirmed in g.a.s.t.'s own materials, which even tell you to practice without helping tools. Nobody coming from Indian board exams, GATE or CAT has trained this way. Here's the three-stage protocol we build our whole program around:

Working memory for this is very trainable — the skill curve on Latin squares in particular is steep and satisfying. But it needs weeks, not days: this is the single best reason not to leave dMAT prep to September.
What's known from g.a.s.t.'s published module descriptions: 90 minutes; questions pair an academic input (text, possibly with tables, figures or formulas) with single-choice questions, 4 options each; it tests application and transfer, not recall. Until official GAM samples drop, the highest-yield preparation:

Starting late? The plan compresses from the front, never the back: keep the diagnostic-first start and the final mock weeks, and shrink the middle drilling to the time you have. GRE-prepped? Skip most equation drilling once the diagnostic confirms it transfers, and give the freed time to figure sequences.
Why the mock weeks are the ones that move your score: there are no dMAT past papers, so the only thing you can genuinely rehearse is the format — the per-section clock that ends on its own, no going back after a section closes, typed equation answers with no options to eliminate, two answer images per figure sequence, no rough paper. On a first attempt, marks are usually lost to format shock and clock management rather than to weak reasoning, and reading about the constraints does not train them; practising them does. A question we see everywhere: "will the first exam be easier? Should I wait?" The grounded answer: if you're applying for Summer Semester 2027 in an affected field, there is nothing to decide — 26 Sept is the only date before your deadlines. For Winter 27/28 hopefuls: no later cycle has been announced yet; the certificate never expires; and the dMAT is a standardised test, meaning results are equated across test dates — there's no confirmed basis for the "first one will be easier" theory. Taking it now de-risks your APS timeline and frees your final year. The only good reason to wait is genuinely not being ready.
Around 6 weeks at ~5 hrs/week is comfortable for most people; the formats are learnable and the no-paper skill is what needs runway. With less time, the plan compresses — but protect the final mock weeks, because they are where the score moves. Waiting until September to start is the mistake.
No. The dMAT rewards format fluency, and format fluency comes from practising the formats under their real constraints — something self-paced practice plus timed mocks in the real interface covers completely. Start with the free diagnostic and let the result tell you where the hours should go.
Both, increasingly. The dMAT isn't pass/fail for APS, but universities can use scores — early reports suggest some programs are already setting score criteria, and more are expected to follow for Summer '27+. Prepare as if the score counts; it's also simply cheaper than a retake at €150.
