Everything confirmed so far about the Digital Master Test — structure, subtests, scoring, fees, dates and centres — compiled from g.a.s.t. and APS India's official publications. No speculation, no consultancy filler.
The dMAT (Digital Master Test) is a standardised academic aptitude test administered by g.a.s.t. — the organisation behind TestDaF and TestAS. Its format was developed with the Universities of Ulm and Kassel, and its original development was supported by the DAAD. From 2026 it is a required element of the APS documentation process for selected Indian Master's applicants to Germany.
It measures how you reason, analyse and apply what you've learned — not how much you can memorise. There is no subject-wise syllabus in the GATE or CAT sense; preparation means building skill in the specific question types below.
Applicants whose previous degree falls in one of these fields, applying for the Summer Semester 2027 intake or later:
Exempt: Bachelor's applicants, PhD applicants, applicants outside the affected fields, confirmed exchange / double-degree / university-partnership students, and anyone who completed APS online registration or shipped complete APS documents before 29 June 2026 (or already holds an APS certificate).
| ELEMENT | DETAIL |
|---|---|
| Duration | ~3 hours of testing plus a 30-minute break between the two modules (3.5 hours total) |
| Modules | Core Module + Subject Module (General Academic Module for APS India applicants) |
| Question format | All single-choice |
| Language | English |
| Delivery | Digital, at licensed g.a.s.t. test centres |
| Fee | €150, paid to g.a.s.t. during registration |
| Note-taking | Not allowed — all subtests must be solved mentally, so train without rough paper |
| Evaluation | Centralised at the TestDaF Institute (Bochum); standardised so all participants are comparable |
| Certificate | Issued by g.a.s.t.; valid indefinitely; result reflected on your APS certificate |
The core module measures general cognitive and analytical skills through three subtests. These are the question types g.a.s.t. publishes official introduction videos for:
A series of grid pictures (matrices) in which figures move, rotate or change colour according to hidden rules — movements can be vertical, horizontal or diagonal, figures can bounce off boundaries or travel along them, and rules can accelerate (1 field, then 2, then 3…). You identify the rules and pick what the next matrices look like. Entirely visual — this question type does not exist in GRE and is where most Indian applicants need the most new practice.

Systems of linear equations with letter unknowns — each letter is an integer between 1 and 20, and exactly one solution satisfies all equations. You solve by substitution and elimination, entirely in your head. If you've prepped GRE/GMAT quant, the skill transfers — mental speed without rough paper is what needs training.

5×5 grids in which each of the letters A–E appears exactly once per row and per column. You deduce the letter belonging in the marked cell purely by elimination — sometimes filling several other cells mentally first. Language-independent, learnable, and very trainable under time pressure.

For APS India applicants, the subject module is the General Academic Module. Tasks pair an academic input (text, possibly with figures, tables or formulas) with a set of related single-choice questions — 4 answer options each, exactly one correct. It tests transfer and application skills — the ability to use what you learned in your degree to work through unfamiliar problems — rather than memorised factual knowledge.
Exam format: 90 minutes for the full subject module. Official practice: g.a.s.t.'s GAM preparatory materials (PDF), published 16 July 2026 — four exercises spanning vectors, hydrostatics, order-quantity models and research methods.
The certificate is downloadable from the g.a.s.t. participant portal, is valid indefinitely, and its result appears on your APS certificate. Important: the dMAT is not pass/fail for APS — a low score does not automatically deny you the APS certificate, and universities decide individually how to weigh the result.

Eleven centres, not ten. d-mat.de lists Kathmandu alongside the ten Indian cities; APS India's page lists only the Indian ten. If you are in Nepal, or closer to Kathmandu than to any Indian centre, it is a legitimate option — the final list is shown during registration.
Booking is first come, first served through g.a.s.t. — APS India cannot reserve seats. If your preferred centre is full, you must pick another.
No. The dMAT has no subject-wise syllabus. It tests reasoning skill across fixed question types — figure sequences, mathematical equations, Latin squares, and applied academic problems. Prep means training those types, not memorising content — see the full preparation guide.
No — if you're in an affected field applying for Summer 2027 or later, the dMAT certificate is part of your APS documentation. You may ship your other APS documents first and submit the dMAT certificate once available, but APS completes only after it's in.
No. Universities decide independently how to use the result. It also doesn't replace anabin recognition of your institution — check anabin before registering.
Both are aptitude tests, but dMAT's core module is dominated by visual and logical reasoning (figure sequences, Latin squares) that GRE never tests, has no vocabulary or essay sections, and is scored 0–200 per module with a percentile rank. GRE quant skills transfer well to the Mathematical Equations subtest.
Yes — Kathmandu is listed as a dMAT test centre on d-mat.de, alongside the ten Indian centres. The APS India page lists only the Indian ten, so it is easy to miss. Eleven in total; availability is confirmed during registration, first come first served.
No. APS India states plainly that the dMAT is not a stand-alone pass/fail test for the APS certificate and that a low score does not automatically lead to refusal. Your result is recorded on the certificate; each university decides independently how to weigh it.
Refunds under certain conditions are covered by g.a.s.t.'s terms; on test day, follow the test centre's and g.a.s.t.'s instructions. Contact kontakt@gast.de for dMAT logistics questions.
